God

To live lives immersed in the divine life does require us to think about what we mean by the divine, by God. This is the task of theology in which we are all involved, often unconsciously. For Christians, to speak of God requires the grammar of the Trinity. God is one and yet also three-fold, traditionally Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Here is a mystery that is beyond us and yet crucial for approaching our complex lives with wisdom that is not reduced to simplistic answers. It is a life-long journey in which we glimpse the revelation of God but also know God is ultimately hidden beyond our ability to fully understand.

Theology, prayer and practice all relate together as we seek a wise immersion in God. There are many traditions of spirituality that richly explore such wisdom. Where our faith becomes stuck we may be tempted to work harder, think more or plan better. Yet the way forward has always been first to seek a renewal from God, a fresh outpouring of the Holy Spirit. The charismatic and contemplative traditions are two that have much to offer our hearts, minds and hands if we are to have our faith transformed.
